Defeat takes its toll on any athlete, in any scenario. But to drop a hard-fought gridiron battle is especially heartbreaking for the men in the trenches. Take the offered lot here, for instance. Beautifully painted by the late Ernie Barnes, himself a former professional lineman, the original painting
depicts a seated, dejected football player following a crushing loss.
Originally measuring 28” wide by 40” high, the framed piece –
which previously hung in the San Diego Hall of Champions – now measures 33”
high by 45” tall. With his outstanding use of elongation, Barnes has made the
already oversized lineman even bigger and has captured perfectly the player’s
personal defeat. The artist has signed the piece in the bottom right corner in
black paint.
Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
