A sack in football can be an intimidating situation for the quarterback but also just as devastating to the QB’s would-be blockers. The late Ernie Barnes, himself a professional offensive lineman for five seasons, knew that better than anyone. And with his incredible talent as a painter he was able to convey that exact scenario in this offered lot, which hung in the San Diego
Hall of Champions. Said Barnes: “Thanks to the American Football League, my art developed with purity as a result of my opportunity to play.”
This lot features a beautifully crafted 28" by 36" oil-on-canvas painting by Barnes entitled “The Pass.” It depicts a right-handed quarterback attempting
to pass the football despite an onslaught of defensive rushers in his grill. It captures the difficulty of the task and the efforts of players on both sides of the football. Framed and matted, it measures 32.5” wide by 41.5” high and is ready to be hung once again. Barnes has signed the bottom right corner of the original painting in white paint. Barnes, who passed away in 2009, was a proven talent both on the football field as well as in the art studio.
Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
