Ernie Barnes, the late artist who also enjoyed a five-year career in professional football, brought a unique perspective to each of his various works of art. Barnes once said: “It is almost impossible to introduce the athlete in the art of satisfying his thirst for competitiveness in athletics…unless the mood and guts of the game are dramatically expressed.”

This lot certainly demonstrates Barnes’s unique style of elongation in his pieces. Entitled “Two at the Ready,” this 16” wide by 12” high charcoal on paper drawing depicts two menacing looking players facing one another looking toward the viewer of the art. If intimidation was his motivation, Barnes captured it here. Beautifully framed and matted, this effort once hung in the San Diego Hall of Champions and now measures 27” wide by 23.5” high. Barnes has signed the original drawing in black ink in the bottom right corner.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
