As a respected artist, the late Ernie Barnes brought great personal motivation to each of his works of art. As a former NFL lineman, he brought a unique perspective to his efforts that very few artists ever experienced.

This lot features a revealing 14” wide by 11” high charcoal on paper drawing that Barnes completed that he entitled “De-Line.” Showing the size, power and intimidation that opposing defensive lines – namely the front four – brought to hard-fought battles, Barnes, a former pulling guard, depicted four imposing figures here huddled up in full gear before the offense’s next snap. “If football is to be the subject then football should be felt when the drawing is complete,” Barnes once said.  The original drawing, which hung in the San Diego Hall of Champions, is framed and matted so that its final presentation size is 25” wide by 20.5” high. Barnes signed the drawing in pencil in the bottom right corner.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
