In 1959, three years before Major League Baseball orchestrated just one All-Star Game between both the American and National leagues, there were a pair of All-Star Games played, one of which occurred at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh on July 7. In that game, won by the National League contingent, 5-4, Dodgers’ pitcher Don Drysdale was named “The Outstanding Player” by the Pittsburgh Sun Telegram evening daily newspaper. As the N.L.’s starting pitcher, Drysdale pitched three shutout innings and struck out four A.L. All-Stars.

This lot features the oversized (21” by 19” high) award plaque that Drysdale received. Positioned on top of a wood plaque is an elevated illustration showing a ball player sliding safely into home plate as he and the catcher await the umpire’s verdict. The top of the gold-colored illustration includes the following text: “26th RENEWAL ALL-STAR BASEBALL GAME Forbes Field, Pittsburgh PA.” An engraved gold plaque on the lower portion of the wooden background finishes off the presentation: “Awarded to DON DRYSDALE Most Outstanding Player by the Pittsburgh Sun Telegram.”

Includes LOA from the Drysdale Family.
