The Holiday Bowl is a college football game that’s been played annually in San Diego for 40 years. The Holiday Bowl is a non-profit organization and has a mission of generating tourism, exposure, economic benefit and civic pride for San Diego and its citizens by producing one of the country’s most exciting bowl game and festival of events. Each year the Holiday Bowl matches up teams from the Pac-12 and Big Ten conferences.
This lot features the 1991 “Thrifty Car Rental” Holiday Bowl Champions Trophy, which, surprisingly, ended in a tie between the BYU Cougars and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Keeping in tune with Holiday Bowl tradition, BYU and the
Hawkeyes battled it out in a game that went down to the final minutes. With 4:19 remaining in the game, BYU quarterback Ty Detmer led his team from 77 yards out. After six plays, the Cougars reached the Hawkeye 18-yard line. The ensuing play resulted in Detmer’s only interception, and the first tie in Holiday Bowl history. In what was the lowest-scoring Holiday Bowl affair, BYU netted 430 yards in total offense to Iowa’s 346. Detmer completed 29 passes for 350 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He was named the 1990 Heisman Trophy winner and was selected in the ninth round of the 1992 NFL Draft.
The offered trophy, which weighs an astounding 55 pounds, boasts a large, two-tiered black-and-gray base that measures 20” wide by 8.5” tall upon which rests a 32” piece of curved acrylic that reads: “Thrifty Car Rental Holiday Bowl.” At the top of the curved acrylic design is a brass football that’s secured by two screws. On the base of the trophy is a large black-plaque with raised gold lettering that reads as follows: “THRIFTY CAR RENTAL: HOLIDAY BOWL 1991 CHAMPIONS December 30, 1991, San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.”
