The Palos Verdes Handicap (now called the Palos Verdes Stakes) is an annual thoroughbred race for horses age four and up that has been held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., since 1951. The six furlongs dirt race now carries a purse of $200,000. This particular lot showcases the winning trophy awarded to “On The Line” from the December 30, 1988, running. Today, the race is run in late January or early February.

Measuring 9.5” tall, the two-handled, gold-washed sterling silver trophy cup sits atop a heavy green marble base that sports an engraved gold plaque reading: “December 30, 1988, Six Furlongs, Won By ON THE LINE, Eugene V. Klein, Owner, D. Wayne Lukas, Trainer, Gary Stevens, Jockey, Time: 1:07:3.” The front of the two-handled trophy is engraved “PALOS VERDES HANDICAP” and those words are centered above the engraved logo of Santa Anita Park. The entire trophy including the base weighs 7.5 pounds; the sterling silver cup alone weighs 642 grams. Light tarnishing is evident inside the trophy cup with more on the engraved plaque. The bottom is hallmarked "Sterling" by "Kirk Stieff."

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
