Standing 7’ 1” with a muscular build, Wilt Chamberlain presented a formidable presence wherever he went. After two varsity seasons for the Kansas Jayhawks, and before embarking on a 14-year NBA career, Chamberlain played one year of professional exhibition ball for the traveling Harlem Globetrotters (1958-59). This lot features a black-and-white photo of Chamberlain performing for the Globetrotters. The 5-1/4" by 7-3/8" photo shows “The Big Dipper” dropping in a two-point basket during yet another exhibition game in front of a sold-out crowd. The photo has been authenticated and encapsulated as Type III by PSA/DNA, meaning second-generation developed off a duplicate negative or wire transmission during the period (within approx. two years of when the picture was taken). A memorable early photo of one of basketball’s greatest players ever.
