High school phenom Wilt Chamberlain had over scholarship offers from more than 200 colleges, but he chose Kansas to play for Phog Allen. To his disappointment, Allen retired before he could play varsity, but Chamberlain went on to lead the Jayhawks to the 1957 Big 7 Championship and was named a first team All-American. Kansas was chosen to play in the NCAA Tournament where the team was met with horrible racial epitaphs from the crowds after winning their games in Dallas and Oklahoma City. Kansas advanced to the finals against North Carolina where the two teams played one of the most dramatic games in NCAA Tournament history. Tied after regulation play, North Carolina eventually won in 54–53 triple-overtime. Despite playing for the runner up, Wilt Chamberlain was named the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. The Type 1 photo of the 1957 University of Kansas Jayhawks, taken by famed Kansas photographer Duke D'Ambra, has a nice warm sepia tone from age. The back has Duke D'Ambra’s stamp as well as the handwritten date, “1957.” The photo has been encapsulated and graded Type 1 Authentic by PSA.
