The late Moses Malone, aka “Chairman of the Boards,” was the most dominant rebounder of his era and one of the great low-post scorers in basketball history. He stood 6’ 10” with an intimidating goatee, but by far his most recognizable feature, much like the great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, were the patented goggles he sported on the court during the latter half of his career. Malone played from 1974 to 1995 on nine different teams beginning with the Utah Stars of the ABA. Combining his ABA and NBA statistics, Malone ranks 7th all-time in career points (29,580) and 3rd in total rebounds (17,834).

Offered here is a scarce pair of Malone’s game-used goggles. Photo research indicated this pair with a navy blue elastic strap was most likely wore sometime during his two-year tenure with the Washington Bullets in 1986-87 and 1987-88. Malone was a double-double machine both seasons in the nation's capital. The goggles are made with hard clear plastic and have a beige rubber nose pad. The bridge is padded and taped with a cushion material for comfort. They are secured with a blue elastic head strap made by Herslof, with tape over the adjustable section. They exhibit solid wear and remain problem-free.

It should be noted that these goggles were misrepresented in a previous auction listing as worn during the late 1980's with the Houston Rockets. Malone played for the Rockets from 1976-82 and had not yet begun wearing goggles in games at that time.

Originally procured from Malone's estate sale following his death in 2015.
