The late Chick Hearn was the longtime radio and television voice of the Los Angeles Lakers. Known primarily as the play-by-play announcer for the Lakers, Hearn is remembered for his rapid fire, staccato broadcasting style, associated with colorful phrases such as “slam dunk,” “air ball,” and “no harm, no foul” that have become common basketball vernacular, and for broadcasting 3,338 consecutive Lakers games starting way back on November 21, 1965.

This lot features a special award the Hearn earned in 1967 from the Selections Committee of the Sportsman’s World Awards. Measuring 11 inches wide by 14 inches high, the award plaque boasts a red felt background upon which is a gold scroll that includes a silhouetted sportsman figure reaching for the stars, beneath which rests an engraved gold plaque that reads: “SPORTSMEN’S WORLD AWARDS, CHICK HEARN, SELECTIONS COMMITTEE, 1967.” Hearn passed away in 2002 at the age of 85. The award originates from the Hearn Estate Collection.
