Charlie Gehringer was a hard-hitting second baseman who played his entire 19-year MLB career with the Detroit Tigers (1924 to ’42). He retired with a career batting average of .320 and was named the American League MVP in 1937 edging out the likes of Yankees great Joe DiMaggio and his Tigers teammate Hank Greenberg. This lot includes a beautifully composed two-page, hand-written letter from Gehringer in slightly faded black ink to a fan named “Michael” in which Gehringer describes his greatest moments as a ball player and what it means to be a major leaguer. The letter is written on “Metropolitan Detroit Chapter March of Dimes Sports Award Dinner” letterhead. He signed the letter: “Best Wished, Charlie Gehringer.” Also included is a single-signed official American League (Brown) baseball that he signed across the sweet spot in blue ink: “Chas. Gehringer.” The signature remains strong and rates 8-9/10 in our book.

Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
