This 6-inch high Acrylic piece houses a 2 1/2-inch in diameter medallion from The Sporting News, the sponsor of the American League Pitcher of the Year award. Bret Saberhagen earned this the second of two awards that he would earn in his career (his first was in 1985) after putting together perhaps his finest individual season, with career highs that included a 23-6 won/loss mark, a 2.16 ERA and 193 strikeouts, numbers that not surprisingly led to a second Cy Young Award for the Kansas City ace. The encased medallion has baseball figurals and "The Sporting News" engraved on the front and the name and "The First Newsweekly in Sports" on the back. A 4-by-1 3/4-inch nameplate at the base of the acrylic section notes "1989 American League Pitcher of the Year, Bret Saberhagen, Kansas City Royals." Saberhagen has signed in bold, black Sharpie on the back of the acrylic section above the medallion. The piece appears to be in essentially as-issued and problem-free condition. Comes with a Letter of Authenticity from Bret Saberhagen.
