Impressive 1958 Sid mercer Memorial Player of the Year Award presented to New York Yankee pitcher Bob Turley, winner of the 1958 American League Cy Young Award that same season. Turley had a masterful 21-7 record with a 2.97 ERA in leading the Yankees to the American League pennant in 1958. In the World Series, after a rough Game 2 start that ended in a loss, he rebounded to win Game 5 by shutting out the Braves on 5 hits and pitched 6 2/3 innings of relief to win Game 7 and bring New York the World Championship. Large 13" by 11" oval award is made of wood with metal crossed bats and ball on diamond. At top is engraved "THE SID MERCER MEMORIAL AWARD". To the left is "PLAYER OF THE YEAR TO BOB TURLEY. On the right side is "FOR HOS OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS AND RICH CONTRIBUTIONS TO BASEBALL". Below is PRESENTED BY THE NEW YORK CHAPTER BASEBALL WRITERS' ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA 1959". Back of the trophy has a Dieges & Clust sticker. The award was presented in early 1959 in recognition of his 1958 season. Included with the award is an original 2/1/59 New York Times wire photo showing Turley being presented with the award.
