Bill “Moose” Skowron was a popular first baseman for the New York Yankees during the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. He helped the Bronx Bombers win four different World Series titles and was named an All-Star every season from 1957 to 1961 with the Yankees and again in 1965 with the Chicago White Sox. He was at his best in the World Series, hitting eight home runs and driving in 29 runs in 39 games. A career .282 hitter, Skowron collected 1,566 hits during his major league career with hit No. 1,500 occurring on July 7, 1966. This lot includes the actual game ball that Skowron hit to collect that memorable milestone. The official game-used American League (Cronin) baseball has been marked in red marker with not only the achievement (“1500 Hit”), but also the date. Unfortunately the date indicated on the baseball (“7-9-66”) is incorrect. Skowron actually collected that memorable hits two days earlier on 7-7-66.
Coincidentally, Lot 320 of this auction includes the actual bat Moose used (from private collector) to get his milestone 1500th base hit. Rare chance to add both pieces to your collection!
