Bill “Moose” Skowron was a popular, slugging first baseman for the New York Yankees during the 1950s and early ‘60s. He collected 1,566 hits during his 14-year career and batted .282. Skowron continued his career with the L.A. Dodgers in 1963 and the Chicago White Sox from 1964 to ‘67. This lot includes the actual bat Skowron used to record his 1,500th career hit, a double off Washington Senators’ southpaw Pete Richert. The memorable hit occurred in the eighth inning of an 8-5 White Sox victory over the host Senators on July 7, 1966. The ash Hillerich & Bradsy Louisville Slugger Bill “Moose” Skowron Professional Signature Model R43 bat shows evidence of heavy use and a handle crack. Many ball marks and impressions are visible on the right and left barrel. Also visible on the bat are green bat rack streaks and there is a moderate coast of pine tar o the handle. "R43" is stamped into top of handle. Skowron has signed and inscribed the bat in black marker across the barrel: “Washington 7/7/66 Bill Moose Skowron “1500” Hit in Major Leagues.” Bat is 36 inches long and weighs 31.3 ounces.

Coincidentally, Lot 387 of this auction includes the actual baseball Moose hit (from Skowron's personal collection) to record his milestone 1500th base knock. Rare chance to add both pieces to your collection!
