The August 8, 1983 issue of Sports Illustrated prominently featured the one-of-a-kind Howard Cosell. It's the only SI cover he ever dawned.

Cosell was widely known for his blustery, confident personality. Cosell said of himself, "I've been called arrogant, pompous, obnoxious, vain, cruel, verbose, a showoff. And, of course, I am." Cosell revolutionized the landscape of sports broadcasting in the United States with his distinctive reporting style. While his predecessors were predominantly recognized for their vibrant play-by-play narrations and color commentary, Cosell introduced a cerebral edge to the genre. He integrated analytical insights and relevant context into his reports, bridging the gap between sports coverage and "hard" news reporting. Despite this, his unique staccato speech pattern, accent, syntax, and rhythm added an individualistic touch of color commentary to his broadcasts.

CGC has graded the copy 9.0, with a population of just one in this grade and only one higher.

8/8/1983 Howard Cosell "The One and Only" Sports Illustrated (His Only SI Cover) – CGC 9.0 (Pop 1, Only One Higher!)
