In the years just after the NFL merger with the AFL, exhibition games between the rival leagues were very popular among football fans. The AFL were particularly keen to give a good showing as they were looked down upon by fans and owners of the older league. On August 24, 1968, the Los Angeles Rams played the San Diego Chargers in a Southern California inter-league clash. The Chargers did the AFL proud by prevailing over LA 35 to 13. After the momentous win, this game ball was presented to Chargers owner Barron Hilton.
The Spalding Official American Football League ball shows good game use with some fading to the leather and scuffs to the white stripes. The ball has been neatly letters with “BARRON HILTON AUG. 24, 1968 CHARGERS 35 - RAMS 13” in white paint. The bat has been signed on all panels by members of the Chargers in black ink. This piece includes a letter of provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
