New York Yankees icon Babe Ruth had many recreational pursuits including fishing. The man who belted 714 home runs during his illustrious 22-year career in Major League Baseball was also an avid fishermen who enjoyed sport fishing whenever he had the chance. This lot features a rare black-and-white, 11” by 14” photo of Ruth fishing in Florida at the age of 52. The photo, which was taken on April 12, 1947, approximately 16 months before his passing, shows an extremely gaunt Ruth standing in a boat holding his reel and rod with his left hand and a lit cigar in his right. Beautifully framed and matted to measure 14” wide by 17” high, the photo is christened at the bottom with white print that reads: “WITH RAY KILTHAU IN FLORIDA APRIL 12 1947.” Ruth died from throat cancer on August 13, 1948. He was 53 years old.
