The 2018 FIFA World Cup hosted by Russia was the first held in Eastern Europe. Iceland and Panama made their World Cup debuts among the 32-team field. Germany, the defending champs, was eliminated in group play. The hosts came very close to making the final four, losing to Croatia on penalties in the quarterfinals. France, Belgium and England joined the former Yugoslavian nation in the Semifinals. The stars of the 2018 World Cup were England striker Harry Kane (Golden Boot), Luka Modric (Golden Ball), Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois (Golden Glove) and 19-year-old French sensation Kylian Mbappe. Ultimately, France and Croatia advanced to the Finals in Moscow where the French won an exciting 4-2 match to claim their second World Cup title. In the 3rd Place match, Belgium shut out England 2-0 to take their first winner’s medal of any kind at the world’s most-watched sporting event.

This lovely 2018 FIFA World Cup Third Place Bronze Medal was awarded to a Belgium National Team official. A total of 50 official winner’s medals were issued to players, coaches and high-level executive members of the top three finishing teams. Made of pure bronze, the front features a relief image of the FIFA World Cup trophy. The reverse has "3rd PLACE” and “FIFA WORLD CUP RUSSIA 2018” in raised relief with the official 2018 World Cup Russia logo at center. The medal, designed with a loop and its original blue silk FIFA-logoed ribbon, measures 60 mm in diameter and weighs 96 grams (incl. ribbon). The medal presents Extremely Fine and the ribbon shows very light wear. It comes housed in its original 7x7x3-inch black presentation case (latch doesn’t close). Not only is this the first third place medal from any World Cup that we have represented at auction, it is the first 2018 winner’s medal of any kind – whether gold, silver or bronze – to be offered publicly.
