The 2012 Detroit Tigers turned in an outstanding season. Managed by Jim Leyland, the team finished first in the American League Central standings with a record of 88-74. After defeating the Oakland A’s in five games in their ALDS battle, they proceeded to sweep the vaunted New York Yankees in four games to claim the team’s 12 A.L. pennant. Though they were then swept themselves in the Fall Classic by the San Francisco Giants, the season will be remembered for many reasons, not the least of which was the individual performance turned in by slugger Miguel Cabrera. With a .330 average, 44 home runs and 139 RBI, Cabrera became the first player in 45 years to win the coveted Triple Crown, leading the American League in all three categories. The last player to accomplish this feat was Boston’s Carl Yastrzemski in 1967. Not surprisingly, Cabrera went on to win the 2012 AL Most Valuable Player Award.
