Randy Johnson retired in 2009 as, without question, the most dominant left-handed power pitcher in history. Only Sandy Koufax can challenge R.J. as the most decorated southpaw ever. And only Nolan Ryan stands in his way as the most overpowering hurler of all time. Needless to say, not much more was expected of the imposing 6' 11" behemoth fittingly known as "The Big Unit." So, anything he could do with the bat was a bonus. Presented here is a high-grade Randy Johnson game used Rawlings professional model bat from his 2001 World Championship season with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Johnson won the NL Cy Young in each of his first four seasons with the D-Backs, averaging 354 strikeouts per year over that unprecedented stretch. In 2001, alongside fellow ace Curt Schilling, R.J. led Arizona to its only World Series title as they upset the Yankees in a memorable Game 7 walk-off thriller.

The Rawlings Big Stick pro model bat reads "BIG STICK", "R.J.", and "DIAMONDBACKS" on the barrel. The Rawlings logo and a thick black stripe comprise the bat's centerbrand. The handle has been spiral taped to Johnson's liking with a moderate coat of pine tar going up to the upper handle. Randy's jersey number "51" is penned in black permanent marker on the barrel end. The knob end also has "51" plus "34-32" denoting the bat's length and weight in inches. The ash bat remains un-cracked and exhibits outstanding evidence of ball contact marks (w/ ink transfers & stitch impressions) on the left and back barrel. Bat rack streaks and cleat marks are also present.

Johnson was not much of a hitter in his day, and went just 8-for-80 in 2001 with 38 K's. His one career home run came in 2003. Still, game-used bats from Hall of Fame pitchers are very desirable among collectors due to their scarcity. This is arguably the best example you can get from R.J.'s storied career.

John Taube of PSA/DNA has authenticated the bat and given it a nearly perfect GU 9 grade.
