Nicknamed the “Wizard of Oz” based on his flawless fielding at shortstop, Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith earned an incredible 13 Rawlings Gold Gloves during his 19-year tenure in the major leagues. He began his career with the San Diego Padres in 1978, finishing second in N.L. Rookie of the Year balloting, and was then traded three years later to the St. Louis Cardinals which is where he played his final 15 seasons. This lot features Smith’s 1990 St. Louis Cardinals autographed and game worn road jersey. The 15-time All-Star selection, always a sure-handed fielder, won his 11th Gold Glove in 1990 and batted .254 with 130 hits to his credit.

The gray Cardinals pullover, V-neck jersey reads “Cardinals” across the front in embroidered red outlined in navy blue and boasts the team’s trademark yellow, blue and red bat-and-birds logo attractively embroidered on the front with Smith’s uniform number “1” in red-on-navy blue tackle twill on the left side. Inside the left front tail is the Rawlings manufacturer’s tagging [size 40] with additional “T,” “SET 1 1990” and “1 INCH EXTRA LENGTH” labels. The back has “O. SMITH” on a separate, sewn on nameplate and “1” again in red-on-navy blue tackle twill. The jersey, which Smith has signed on the front in black marker, exhibits light to medium wear. On the left short sleeve is a special gray patch embroidered in black “AAB JR.” that was worn during the ’90 season to acknowledge the death of team owner August Anheuser Busch Jr., who died on Sept. 1989 at the age of 90.

Autograph pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
