Super Bowl XXIII was among the most closely contested NFL championship games played. The 1989 game was the second meeting between the San Francisco 49ers and Cincinnati Bengals. Both teams were evenly matched, and the game was low scoring through the first half, each managing a single field goal each, the first halftime tie in Super Bowl history. Finally in the third quarter Cincinnati increased their lead to 13 followed by another 49ers field goal. This Type 1 photo captures the action in the 4th quarter as 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice dives into the end zone with the touchdown that tied the game at 13-13. Cincinnati would pull ahead 16-13 again, but a Joe Montana pass to John Taylor with less than a minute left would give San Francisco the win. The photograph measures X” x X” and displays light edge wear and sharp corners. The reverse has the original caption slug affixed along with an AP Wire Photos stamp and handwritten notations. The photo has been encapsulated as a Type I by PSA.
