Over three days in April 1989 the San Diego Sports Arena was the setting for the best team tennis competition the city ever hosted, when the United States faced France in a Davis Cup quarterfinal.

Feuding before the match were two American stars: an aging John McEnroe and 18-year-old Andre Agassi. McEnroe claimed Agassi’s “act is wearing thin,” and Agassi countered that McEnroe was among the most negative people in the world.  It didn’t matter on the court. The U.S. team swept to a 5-0 victory, with McEnroe routing Yannick Noah and Agassi handling Henri Leconte on the opening day.

Presented here is a large pewter award commemorating that historic US Tennis team victory. The heavy 14-1/4” round platter features event titling around the perimeter with the score “UNITED STATES 5 FRANCE 0” at the center surrounded by raised facsimile signatures of the participants. The award has been on display at the San Diego Hall of Champions for many years.
