In no uncertain terms, the 1989 horse-racing season was a good one for “Open Mind” and her owner, Eugene V. Klein. The powerful filly won the award as American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly, and also won the coveted American Triple Tiara of Thoroughbred Racing. She won eight of her 11 starts including the New York Filly Triple Crown, which consists of the Acorn Stakes, the Mother Goose Stakes, and the Coaching Club American Oaks. Each of these are Grade I events. This lot features Klein’s prized 1989 Triple Tiara for Fillies trophy as presented by the New York Racing Association.

Standing 18 inches tall and 13.5 inches across, the gold-washed sterling silver hallmarked trophy is beautifully designed but unmarked, save for its descriptive wooden base that is detached from the trophy itself. The two-handed award features wreath designs across its center. The accompanying black wooden base measures 4.25” tall by nine inches in diameter and features an engraved silver band that wraps around the outside. The informative text on the band reads as follows: “NEW YORK RACING ASSOCIATION Triple Tiara for Fillies OPEN MIND - THE ACORN, May 27, 1989, THE MOTHER GOOSE, June 11, 1989, THE COACHING CLUB AMERICAN OAKS (July 5, 1989.” The winning time for the one-mile Acorn Stakes was 1:35.40; the winning time for the 1-and-1/16-mile The Mother Goose was 1:49.40; and the winning time in the 1-and-1/8-mile The Coaching Club American Oaks race was 2:32.40. The trophy weighs 12.5 lbs. overall and 7.4 lbs. (3.4kg) without the base.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
