In 1986, late horse-racing owner Gene Klein purchased “Winning Colors” from Echo Valley Farm and turned her over to D. Wayne Lukas for training. Following in the hoof prints of Regret (1915) and Genuine Risk (1980) she was the third filly ever to win the Kentucky Derby and the first Derby winner for Lukas. With her strapping physique and catch-me-if-you-can style, Winning Colors was hailed as an “amazon” after she routed a field of males by 7 ½-lengths in the Santa Anita Derby. But, she is best remembered for her brilliant and gutsy Kentucky Derby win. In the 1988 Derby she took command early to hold off defending champion Forty Niner by a head. She retired with eight wins out of 19 starts and was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2000.

The offered trophy shows Winning Colors, ridden by jockey Gary Stevens, in full stride during her unforgettable ’88 Kentucky Derby victory. The sculpted trophy stretches 17 inches tall and features a silver metal horse and bronzed jockey mounted on a 25” wide wooden base filled with a gray marble slab that measures 22” wide by seven inches deep and three quarters of an inch thick. The front of the wooden base boasts an engraved gold plaque that reads: “WINNING COLORS 1988 Kentucky Derby Winner, Cindy Wolf.” The entire trophy remains intact and presents beautifully. The impressively designed piece weighs a hefty 40 pounds.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
