The San Diego Aztecs men’s basketball team has won 21 regular-season conference titles dating to 1923 including six conference tournament championships. Since 1999, under the direction of head coach Steve Fisher until the year before last, the Aztecs claimed four of those conference tournament crowns and even advanced all the way to the NCAA’s “Sweet Sixteen” (2011 and ’14). In 1985, while competing in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), the Aztecs posted an overall record of 23-8 (11-5 in conference) and won the WAC tournament. In the championship game, the Aztecs defeated regular-season WAC Champion Texas-El Paso, 87-81.
This lot features the Aztecs’ championship trophy from their memorable victory over the UTEP Miners. The impressive trophy, which measures 20 inches tall, features a gold-colored metallic basketball perched atop a gold-colored stand that rests on a six-inch-tall wooden base. The base, which measures nine inches wide by nine inches deep, includes a specially engraved gold plaque on the front that reads: “1985 WAC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY.”
Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
