“Pistol Pete” Maravich was an NBA Hall of Famer who turned heads in every arena by virtue of his fancy dribbling and acrobatic shots. He was an All-American who still remains the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer with 3,667 points (44.2 points per game average). Maravich, who died in 1988, went on to the NBA and once again established himself as a top-notch scorer and playmaker. Initially playing for the Atlanta Hawks (1970 to ‘74) before moving onto play for the New Orleans/Utah Jazz (1974 to ’80), Maravich was a five-time NBA All-Star (1973-74, 1977-79) who led the league in scoring in 1977 when he averaged 31.1 points per game.

Consistently plagued by knee injuries during the latter part of his career, Maravich was placed on waivers by the Jazz in January 1980 after appearing in only 17 games. The Boston Celtics, led by rookie sensation Larry Bird, picked him up and utilized his skills as a part-time contributor who wound up helping Boston to a league best 61-21 record. In what turned out to be his last season, Maravich played in 26 games for the Celtics where he averaged 17 minutes and 11.5 points per game.

This lot features Maravich’s game worn Boston Celtics road jersey from his final NBA season. The offered green road jersey (100% nylon) shows light to moderate wear and includes proper Sand-Knit manufacturer’s tagging on the front left tail. Two sewn-on tags appear reading “Designed & Tailored Exclusively for the BOSTON CELTICS by Sand-Knit” while the other Sand-Knit tag directly below it reads “SIZE 44” and includes washing instructions. “CELTICS” appears arched across the front in white tackle twill with his uniform number “44” appearing just below the team name in 5-and-7/8-inch tall numbers. The rear of the jersey reads “MARAVICH” arched across the shoulders in white tackle twill with his uniform number just below his name in slightly larger, seven-and-7/8-inch tall numbers. A separate 100% NYLON tag appears on the right inseam complete with washing instructions. The Celtics traditional white piping appears on the sleeves and around the collar. Jersey shows no alterations or repairs. Getty 53032817 has a nice style match (possible photo-match).

What a tremendous piece of basketball history from one of its flashiest players who was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame just one year prior to his untimely death at the age of 40.

Includes LOA from MEARS with a Grade of A9.
