The Yankees of the early 1980's went through a transitional era of older veteran stars and young rising stars, from Hall of Famers Reggie Jackson, Goose Gossage and Dave Winfield to Graig Nettles, Ron Guidry and rookie first baseman Don Mattingly. Despite accumulating the most total wins of any MLB team during the 80's, the Yanks failed to win a World Series -- coming close in '81 against the Dodgers when the fell in six games. It was the first decade since the 1910's that they did not win at least two championships.
