On September 15, 1978, Muhammad Ali did the unthinkable: he defeated Leon Spinks to recapture the heavyweight championship of the World. The 36 year-old Ali had lost the title to the decade-younger Spinks in February of that year, and a rematch was held at the Astrodome in New Orleans. This dramatic photo was snapped as Ali landed a right to Spinks’ face. The force of Ali’s punch is captured in Spinks’ expression and the spray of sweat and water unleashed by Ali’s glove. Among perfectly framed boxing action photographs, this one is certainly one of the finest. The photo has been printed to the edge with no white border. The edges show some light wear, but the corners remain sharp. The reverse has a September 17, 1978 dated caption slug which narrates to action depicted. A United Press International stamp is visible and there is some light surface wear. The photo has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
