With an AL MVP Award and two World Series rings already under his belt, Reggie Jackson entered the 1974 season at the top of the baseball food chain – and he was still four seasons away from earning the “Mr. October” moniker that made him a legend in pinstripes. While the outspoken slugger would only place fourth in MVP voting this time around, his Oakland Athletics were once again the last team standing after disposing of the L.A. Dodgers in a gentleman’s sweep in the ’74 Fall Classic. The rare three-peat gave Charlie O. Finley’s squad that elusive “dynasty” status thanks in large part to the generational talent wearing #9 who would eventually wear out his welcome with the eccentric, penny-pinching owner.
Featured here is Reggie’s game worn jersey from his 29-homer, 93-ribby 1974 campaign in that classic A’s yellow knit pullover style. A green and white tackle twill "A's" adorns the heart with his No. “9” on the verso in the same format. "JACKSON” in green block letters is sewn straight across the upper back. Striped trim adorns sleeve cuffs and collar. The front center tail provides proper "McAuliffe Uniform Corp." tagging with secondary “1974”, size “42” and wash instruction labels. A faint autograph by Jackson is still visible on the left sleeve. Wear is described as "heavy" by MEARS on its A8 authentication letter, with two points deducted due to some staining and adhesive remnants on the fabric. The jersey was displayed at the previous owner’s restaurant/bar in Southern California for two decades. LOA from MEARS graded A8. Autograph certified by Beckett.
