Stunning 1972-73 New England Whalers World Championship ring from the inaugural season of the World Hockey Association. The Whalers were one of the original members of the WHA. That first season they had the best record in the WHA and won the Eastern Division with 94 points, taking all 3 play-off series to win the first Avco World Trophy, the symbol WHA championship. The team was coached by legendary ex-Boston University coach Jack Kelley and featured a combination of NHL stars (Ted Green - Boston, Rick Ley, Jim Dorey and Brad Selwood - Toronto, Tom Webster - Detroit, and Al Smith, Pittsburgh) plus a number of American born players. Incredibly gorgeous Balfour ring is 14K white gold with real diamonds. Size 11. "W" in diamonds set in green stone on top with WHA Champions 1973 surrounding. One side says "Wood" "Exec." and the New England Whalers logo. Other has "World Champions" with the WHA logo and Avco Cup. Printed are the words "Avco World Trophy World Hockey Association Champions". The ring in outstanding condition. The Championship ring was awarded to Godfrey Wood, one of the original owners of the Whaler franchise and comes with a signed letter from Wood stating that this is his 1973 WHA New England Whalers World Championship ring.
