The 1970 FIFA World Cup held in Mexico was the first hosted in North America and the last appearance on the world stage for Pelé. The Brazilian legend went out in style, leading Seleção to its third World Cup title – all during his great reign. Presented here is the coveted Jules Rimet Trophy issued by FIFA to a member of the Brazil Football Confederation (CFB) for this triumph. Widely regarded as the greatest World Cup team ever, Brazil finished with a perfect record. They won all six matches in the final tournament and were victorious in every qualifer match leading up to it as well, a streak that lasted over two years. In the Finals, Brazil defeated Italy 4-1 with goals from Pelé, Gérson, Jairzinho and captain Carlos Alberto. The CBF was allowed to keep the trophy permanently as a new version would be introduced for the next World Cup in 1974.
From 1930 to 1970, the Jules Rimet Trophy stood as the official World Cup trophy, honoring the former FIFA president from France who served the longest ever term (1921-54). French sculptor Abel Lafleur's original double-sided 1930 model featured a gold-plated Sterling silver statuette of Nike, Greek goddess of victory, holding a decagonal cup overhead and standing atop a Lapis Lazuli gemstone base. A taller base was installed for the 1958 World Cup to allow more winning nations to be engraved on metal plaques. Like the Stanley Cup, there was traditionally one official trophy. After players on the champion side celebrated with it following their Finals victory, it would be returned to FIFA's headquarters and held there until the next World Cup.
According to our consignor from Brazil who acquired this directly from the original recipient, individual presentation versions of the 1970 Jules Rimet were sanctioned by FIFA to be made for important CFB executives/staff. Unlike the individual winners’ gold medals awarded to all players and staff members, only a select few of these special Jules Rimet presentation trophies were given to CBF members (a previous example stated that only 12 were made). Starting in 1974, FIFA switched to its current trophy design by Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga (produced by Bertoni), making 1970 the last year of the revered Jules Rimet.
Brass plaques engraved with each of the eight previous World Cup winning nations are applied to every side of the octagonal base, with the central side bearing the titular plaque, “COUPE DU MONDE – LE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION – COUPE JULES RIMET.” The plaque with “BRASIL CAMPEAO 1970” is located on its left facing side. The trophy stands 13.25” tall (4.25" at its widest) and weighs 4.3 lbs. (nearly 70 oz.), with green felt backing to the underside of the base. The designs of these special edition trophies are nearly identical in appearance. The differences come in either the exact wording on the plaques or the material, shape and color of the statuette and bases. Both the Nike statuette and base of this example are composed of a resin material and then painted in gold and blue. It presents in outstanding condition with little handling evident.
It should be noted that in 2013, two individual 1970 Jules Rimet trophies sold at auction for $27,971 and $34,769, respectively. The former's statuette was crafted in "lightweight plaster or resin" with provenance from a FIFA-contracted Executive Chef. The latter's statuette was done in "gilt metal" with no provenance provided. We contacted the FIFA World Football Museum in Switzerland, but they were unable to verify the number of these 1970 individual presentation trophies made and distributed.
