This 1970-72 Hillerich & Bradsby model B278 Johnny Bench professional model bat dates to time period that Bench firmly established himself as one of the game’s all time greatest hitting backstops. Bench led the National League in home runs and RBI both in 1970 (45 HR’s, 148 RBI) and 1972 (40 HR’s, 125 RBI). 1970 would also mark his finest all around season as he hit .293 and was named the National League’s MVP at year’s end. Selected to baseball’s All Century Team in 1999, Bench is today widely considered to be the greatest all around catcher in the history of the game. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989.

This ideal Bench gamer remains un-cracked and exhibits evidence of moderate use. Several ball marks and ball stitch impressions are visible on the right, left and back barrel. Blue, red and green bat rack marks are visible on all sides of the barrel. Cleat impressions are visible on the left barrel and there is a light coat of pine tar on the upper handle. The model number (B278) is stamped into the knob. Bench's number (5) is written on the knob in black marker and his number (5) is also written on the top barrel in fading marker. The bat has been autographed by Bench on the right barrel in black marker.

A simply magnificent Johnny Bench game bat used during the most prolific period of his illustrious career. Exceptional in all respects. Length: 35.5", Weight: 33.1 oz.

Includes a LOA from John Taube of PSA/DNA (GU9).

Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
