Mays’ accomplishments over the course of his twenty-two-year career were nothing less than spectacular.
He ranks among the top ten in virtually every significant offensive category, though his statistics can
never fully express his greatness on the diamond. He was, arguably, the greatest all-around player in
history, displaying a rare combination of speed, power and athleticism seldom seen before or since. Mays
spent twenty full seasons in a Giants uniform, and during that time he was selected to nineteen All-Star
games. By every measure used to assess game used baseball garments, the offered San Francisco Giants
road jersey worn by Willie Mays in 1969, and their accompanying 1970 pants are superb. On the jersey’s
front left tail is the “W.A. Goodman & Sons” manufacturers tag. Below this is a large grey flannel tag with
“Mays 42/3 1969” black chain stitch. Across the front of the jersey is “SAN FRANCISCO” in black on orange
tackle twill while the back bears the famed number “24” in the same tackle twill. On the left sleeve is the
original, undisturbed MLB “100th Anniversary” patch. The jersey is autographed on front in bold blue
marker. On the back inside waistband of the pants is the “Rawlings” manufacturers size 32 tag. Adjacent is
the wash instructions tag with the “SET 1 #8P 1970” flag tag. Next to this is a felt strip tag with “Mays 24 32
25” black chain stitch. The pants are autographed on front in black marker. This totally original, unaltered
uniform shows excellent game-use with no significant structural faults. The uniform’s magnificent display
quality is only matched by its historical importance. Without question, this among the finest May’s uniforms
of its era the hobby has ever seen.
