In 1962 the Houston Colt .45's joined the New York Mets as one of two new National League expansion franchises. Named after "The Gun that Won the West", the club's unique "Smoking Colt .45" logo displayed on the front of their jerseys was easily the most unique team emblem baseball had seen in quite some time. The fact that it was only incorporated for three years (they changed their name to the Astros in 1965) has resulted in it becoming one of the rarest and most highly sought after game jerseys in collecting today. Offered is a phenomenal original example of that classic garment worn by manger Harry Craft during the club's inaugural 1962 season. The Colt .45s started their inaugural season on April 10, 1962 against began with a three-game sweep of the Cubs. Inside the rear collar of Craft’s 1963 jersey is the “Mac Gregor” manufacturer’s tag with jersey size “40”. Adjacent is the manager’s number “1” written in faded black marker. Across the front is “COLTS” done in orange and navy blue chain stitch along with a “Colt .45” pistol embroidered in navy blue and white chain stitch. The manager’s number appears on back in navy on orange tackle twill. The jersey is properly tagged, completely original and unaltered throughout and remains in magnificent condition.
