Billy Consolo was a shortstop and eventually a coach in the major leagues who played for five different teams between 1953 and 1962, most notably the Boston Red Sox and Washington Senators/Minnesota Twins. Primarily used in a reserve role, he enjoyed his best season with the 1957 Red Sox, batting .270 in 68 games. He did, however, have one well-traveled season (1962) when he played for three different teams: the Philadelphia Phillies (13 games), Los Angeles Angels (28) and Kansas City Athletics (54). This lot features his 1962 game-worn home jersey during his short stint with the Phillies.

The red-pinstriped flannel shows moderate use with proper “Wilson” manufacturer’s tagging on the left front tail with washing instructions and [size] 42 included. A separate cloth tag reading “1962” in black chain-stitching is positioned just below the manufacturer’s tag. On the inside collar of the jersey is stitched "Consolo" in black onto a sewn-on nameplate indicating the player who wore it. The distinctive “Phillies” team name – with stars over the “i’s” – is stitched across the front of the jersey in red embroidered cursive lettering outlined in white. The same holds true for Consolo’s uniform number 15 on the back of the jersey. Considerable shrinkage and some fraying is evident in both areas. The journeyman major leaguer has autographed the jersey on the left front breast in black felt-tip marker. The signature rates 8-9/10 in our book. A classic piece of sports memorabilia that is now more than a half century old.

Part of the esteemed Delbert Mickel estate collection. Autograph pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
