The 1962 USC Trojans football team, coached by John McKay, closed out a perfect season by beating Notre Dame 25-0 at home on Dec. 1 to finish with a 10-0 record. The final Associated Press (AP) poll, which determined the unofficial national championship, was released on December 3. USC finished first, followed by Wisconsin, Mississippi, Texas and Alabama. The NCAA Football Guide recognized the University of Southern California as the 1962 champion as No. 1 in both the AP poll and the UPI poll. In the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day, the Trojans recorded to a 42-37 victory over second-ranked Wisconsin. This lot includes a team-signed, USC branded Rawlings football that includes the autographs of all 44 team members in green ink as well as head Coach John McKay and five other members of the coaching staff including USC mainstay Marv Goux. What’s unique about this ball is that every player’s uniform number precedes their individual autographs so it’s easy to identify every scrawl. The top panel includes a special identifier in slightly faded black marker that reads: “USC 1962 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.” The same panel includes an inscription from USC assistant coach Mike Giddings who evidently sent this football originally to a pair of recruiting scouts named Roger Van Pelt and Clark J. Kenyon. Notable signatures on the ball include: halfback Willie F. Brown, quarterbacks Peter Beathard and Craig Ferdik, fullback Ron Heller, tight end Hal Bedsole and two-way tackle Marv Marinovich.

Includes Letter of Provenance for the Newport Sports Museum.

Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
