Offered here is a historically significant original Type I photograph of John Glenn taken January 19, 1965, at Cape Canaveral, Florida. One month later, on Feb. 20th, Glenn lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in NASA’s single-man Friendship 7 mission to become the first man to orbit planet Earth. A distinguished member of the Mercury Seven, Glenn was the third American and fifth human in history to ever be in space. He would later go on to have a long career in politics as Ohio Senator (1974-99).
The 8” by 10” black-and-white image shows Glenn in his famous flight suit. The reverse has a dated caption and credits NASA and the U.S. Air Force with its release. One of the earliest shots of America’s first space hero, it comes in pristine condition.
