Most debates pertaining to the greatness of Willie Mays do not concern his ranking among baseball’s premier players, but whether or not he was THE single greatest player of all time. Whether it was hitting for average, smashing home runs, making a spectacular catch in the outfield or stealing a base, Mays could do it all. A National League All-Star for an unbelievable 20 consecutive seasons, Mays is one of only three players in the history of the game to amass over 3,000 hits and 500 home runs.
With labeling dating to the 1961-67 period, this 35 inch, 33.7 ounce Adirondack model M63 Willie Mays professional model bat is un-cracked and exhibits evidence of heavy use. Many ball marks and ball stitch impressions are visible on all sides of the barrel. Cleat marks can be seen on the back barrel. Also visible on the bat is a water stain on the top of the barrel. The model number (M63) is stamped into the knob. Mays added his signature and career home run total inscription “660” on the front barrel in black marker. Considering that Mays retired with 660 home runs, and the bats tremendous evidence of usage, it’s fair to assume that this club contributed to that lofty number.
