Since it opened in 1950, many great fighters and celebrities have been associated with Angelo and Chris Dundee’s 5th Street Gym in Miami Beach – but none more so than Muhammad Ali. The Champ began training at 5th Street when he was still known as Cassius Clay and continued to work out and train for bouts at the Miami Beach landmark through the 1970s. It was at 5th Street that The Beatles met the future champ as he trained for his first Sonny Liston fight in 1964. Many of the iconic photos taken of Ali over his career used the 5th Street Gym as the backdrop. This museum-worthy set of boxing trunks were donned by Ali during some of his 1960s workouts at 5th Street.

The red trunks feature a white waistband and white stripes down each side. An “ANGELO & CHRIS DUNDEE MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA” label is sewn on the outside front of the waistband along with the remains of a white tag with size “36” in faded marker. The inside front of the waistband has “ALI” handwritten in faded black marker. The trunks display plenty of wear and have faded slightly from age. A great piece of Muhammad Ali’s legacy. The trunks have a solid provenance in that they come from the collection of Ali’s former assistant trainer, Wali Muhammad, whose letter of provenance is included. Also included is an LOA from boxing expert Craig Hamilton.
