Pittsburgh’s Roberto Clemente was at the very beginning of his career when he was chosen to be one of the 38 players featured in Kahn’s 1959 baseball card set. Clemente had been in the majors since 1955, but it was 1959 that turned out to be his breakout season. Number 21 batted .296 that summer, the last time he’d hit below .300 for the next eight years. Before his untimely death flying supplies to earthquake victims in 1972, Clemente would win four batting championships, an MVP Award and help Pittsburgh win two World Series. His ’59 Kahn’s card features the young star’s portrait along with his distinctive facsimile signature across the front. This example of Clemente’s 1959 Kahn’s card has been graded a PR 1 by PSA – but in our opinion the visual impact of the card far outweighs any number grade. ’59 Kahn’s are notoriously found in poor condition due to their being available only in packages of hot dogs, so any example of a Clemente from this series is noteworthy to say the least.  There are a total of 26 copies on the PSA pop report making this copy a true scarcity in the hobby. This card has been encapsulated by PSA and graded PR 1.
