The 1958 Kansas City Athletics finished the regular season with a record of 71-83, good enough for seventh place in the American League standings, 19 games behind the front-running New York Yankees. While the team’s record was less than impressive, the Athletics did have a few players of note on their roster including future Hall of Famer Whitey Herzog as well as Roger Maris, who set a new single-season home run record just three years later when he played for the Yankees. This lot includes a team-signed baseball from the ’58 Athletics. The official American league (Harridge) baseball was signed in blue ink by 29 members of the team including both Manager Harry Craft and left fielder Bob Cerv across the sweet spot. Other notable signatures on the baseball include Herzog, Maris, Ralph Terry and Bob Grim. Both the signatures (overall rating would be in the 7-8/10 range) and the baseball are in surprisingly good condition given the age of the baseball.
