Former big league center fielder (and manager) Bill Virdon burst upon the MLB scene in 1955 and promptly was named National League Rookie of the Year while playing for the St. Louis Cardinals after batting .281 with 17 home runs and 68 runs batted in. Though he was dealt to the Pittsburgh Pirates during the following season, Virdon’s outstanding rookie debut can’t be ignored.

Offered here is his 1955 St. Louis Cardinals game worn home jersey from that memorable rookie campaign. Remaining in completely original, unaltered condition, the offered white flannel zip-front pullover jersey displays the team name – “Cardinals” – in red and black felt script across the front with Virdon’s uniform number "9" in red felt with navy blue outline on the reverse. The jersey front includes the classic embroidered "birds on bat" Cardinals’ logo across the chest. On the jersey’s left front tail is his name, “Bill Virdon,” chain stitched in red script. The Rawlings “Hall of Fame Flannel” manufacturing tag remains sewn in the same area with a [size] "42" adjacent flag tag. The interior left front tail reveals a dry clean tag including a “Set 1 1955” flag tag. Red piping outlines the length of the jersey’s zipper and continues around the collar and encircles both short sleeve openings. The jersey shows moderate wear, but remains in terrific original condition with superb display qualities. Only a couple of small moth-eaten holes are present on the front of the jersey near the top of the zipper area.
