An extraordinarily rare photo of Sandy Koufax taken just after he signed his contract to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Koufax had finished his sole college season by going 3-1 and striking out 51 batters in 32 innings. His blazing fastball caught the eyes of the Dodgers scouts, and he was given a $14,000 signing bonus. The actual signing of the contract was in the Dodgers offices on December 14, 1954, and in this photo snapped to record the occasion, Christmas decorations can be seen in the background.
Because Koufax barely played his first few seasons with Brooklyn, photos showing him at this early part of his career are exceedingly hard to find, making this one taken on the very day of his becoming a Dodger especially significant.
The Type 1 photo shows light wear with some corner rounding. There is some surface abrasions and stray ink mark is found on Koufax’s hand. The photo has been encapsulated and graded an Authentic Type 1 by PSA.
