Original Type I photo of the Milwaukee Braves’ top four home run hitters from the 1953 squad (from left to right): 1B Joe Adcock, 3B Eddie Mathews, LF Sid Gordon and RF Andy Pafko. Leading the way was Mathews who, in just his second big league season, cracked an NL-best 47 big flies and knocked in 135 runs for the 92-62 Bravos. A 20-year-old Henry Aaron would take over for Gordon in left field the following year.
Each posing in unison on one knee and holding a bat, the landscape shot presents beautifully in sharp focus. There is a minor crease in the upper right corner. The back has a long AP caption facing inward.
