Vern Mikkelsen was a former standout basketball player for Hamline
University in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where he went to school on a
basketball scholarship at the age of 16. In his senior year, Mikkelsen
led NCAA Division II in field goal percentage as Hamline won the 1949 NAIA
Division I Men's Basketball Tournament and Mikkelsen was voted an
All-American. The 6'7" forward would later star for the Minneapolis
Lakers from 1949 to ’59, helping them win four NBA titles and securing his place in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. This lot features a rare Vern Mikkelsen game-worn, signed and inscribed 1949 College All-American full warm-up suit,
including jacket and pants. Ironically, he wore it as a member of the 1949 College All-Stars in an exhibition game against his future NBA team.
The satin warm-up suit is largely white with red and blue trim. The
zippered jacket is lined with cotton and includes Wilson manufacturer’s
tagging on the inside rear collar with a sewn-on cloth tag with black
stitching (“S – 36”) and a flag tag reading [size] “46.” The front left
chest area is sporting an embroidered, red, white and blue AAU style
patch that reads “ALL AMERICAN 1949.” Mikkelsen autographed the front of
the jacket, just beneath the embroidered patch, and then added a
lengthy description near the bottom of the jacket: “VERN MIKKELSEN
College All-Stars vs. MPLS. Lakers Chicago Stadium 1949.” The matching
warm-up pants include a Wilson manufacturer’s tag on the inside rear
waistband with a flag tag reading “36” indicate the length of the
inseam. Both the jacket and pants show their age with some slight
discoloration and wear in parts, but they remain in good condition
overall.
