Presented here is an antique 1948 Times-Legion Golden Gloves belt buckle from the personal collection of renowned Golden Gloves trainer
Robert "Pop" Howard, who mentored Ali in the late 1950's when he was just an amateur teenager. Howard passed away in 1960 and was legendary in the city of Chicago for his work with young, up-and-coming boxers. This metallic belt buckle with gold-colored plating (precious metal composition unknown) measures 2" by 1.4" (52mm by 38mm) with significant wear and some dark green tarnishing. "19" and "48" flank two boxing gloves in raised relief on the front, with "TIMES-LEGION GOLDEN GLOVES" on the bottom. Fights took place at Hollywood Legion Stadium; L.A. Times was the co-presenter of awards.
Consigned by Pop Howard's granddaughter.
