In a 14-season career from 1927 through 1946, Ralph "Red" Kress was an offensively productive shortstop for the St. Louis Browns (1927–1932, 1938–1939), Chicago White Sox (1932–1934), Washington Senators (1934–1936), Detroit Tigers (1939–1940) and New York Giants (1946). After Kress finished his playing career with the Giants in 1946 he stuck with the team in 1947 as a coach under manger Mel Ott. The offered New York Giants road jersey is a beautiful, completely original and unaltered example from the estate of former Giants player Lou Lombardo. Lombardo was 19 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 22, 1948, with the New York Giants. He only appeared in two games for the Giants, but retained this jersey, as issued to him, along with a pair of road pants that formerly belonged to Johnny Mize (see lot 546). Every aspect of the jersey, including all lettering, tagging and number on reverse (2) is unaltered. The jersey shows moderate usage wear, retaining an excellent vintage appearance. Includes a letter of provenance from the son of Lou Lombardo.
